The Maurten Bicarb System takes a new approach to unlocking the athletic potential of bicarbonate. The system is made up of three individual components — A, B, and C — the mixing bowl, the hydrogel component, and the bicarbonate component. The components work in harmony to create a bicarbonate experience with enhanced tolerability and duration.

The Bicarb System

Component A — Bowl
The Maurten Bicarb System bowl is designed for accurate and optimal mixing and serving. It is printed with clear instructions, and is sized for single-hand holding and includes a screw-top lid for traveling and storage.

Component B — Hydrogel
History in the making. The hydrogel component draws on our years of extensive hydrogel research to create a specially formulated hydrogel to encapsulate and protect the sodium bicarbonate from stomach acid and allow for easy swallowing without chewing. Each serving contains 40g of carbs to help athletes pre-fuel their race or session.

Component C — Bicarbonate
So minuscule, it’s massive. The bicarbonate component contains groundbreaking mini bicarb tablets designed to offer far greater control. They allow for a slower release of bicarbonate in the intestine — which can both help reduce stomach issues and lengthen the duration of the bicarb effect.

Preparation is key — and getting bicarbonate right requires forward thinking. The optimal timeframe for a Bicarb System dose is 1–2 hours after a meal, such as breakfast, and 1.5–2 hours before starting high-intensity training or competition.

Getting into the details of how bicarb can improve the body’s buffering capacity during lactic-heavy activities requires a science lesson.

So let’s go granular.

High-intensity exercise causes a build-up of hydrogen ions (H+), leading to a drop in muscle pH. It’s a process called *acidosis*. It’s what impacts performance — negatively.

Taking sodium bicarbonate can increase blood bicarbonate and blood pH concentration — which helps move H+ ions out of the muscles. This leads to better control of muscle pH — which is a win-win for power-based sessions and races.
