Gel 100
★★★★★
"These are wildly expensive, but I fear they are worth it. I have the most sensitive system in the world, and no GI issues (have tried the caf 100 and the regular 100 gels). I also love that they taste kind of like nothing because if I do burp mid-run, I don't have some terrible fruit or chocolate taste in my mouth - it's just slightly sweet. I was really hoping the hydrogel technology they use would be my answer to fueling for my marathon training with the most sensitive stomach in the world, and sure enough they work. You should buy them. I'll continue to use them throughout the training block and on race day. "

No stomach issues, great fuel

Gel 160
★★★★★
Excellent product; immediately delivered to my legs when cycling. I could eat 4 or 5 of them over a long ride and my guts would never feel saturated

Maurten Gel is a carbohydrate sports fuel based on Hydrogel Technology, in a portable single-serve sachet.

Maurten Gels are designed for endurance sport. It doesn’t matter greatly if your sport is road running, trail running, triathlon, or cycling, the need to access carbohydrates in a format that limits the risk of distress in the stomach is the same. Whether you are looking for triathlon gels, an endurance gel, or a running gel, to support training and racing, Maurten Gels are developed to optimize the intake and absorption of carbohydrates during higher intensity activity.

Science has shown that training our guts with certain amounts of sports nutrition decreases the likelihood of gastrointestinal distress on race day. Working out the right gels for running, gels for cycling, or your preferred gel for triathlon takes time.

Unlike many traditional gels that are just syrupy mixes of water and carbohydrates, Maurten uses Hydrogel Technology. The gel is already in hydrogel form — which creates the semi-solid, firm texture — so unlike other gels on the market, you don’t have to drink water at the same time. Although rehydrating and drinking to thirst still matters.

Why use gels for running and endurance sport.

Why use gels for running and endurance sport.

The body starts every session or race with a finite amount of fuel. As exercise intensity and duration increase, that store will start to deplete — and eventually run out. To maintain performance, endurance athletes need to consume carbohydrates as they go. Going for longer or going further requires more fuel.

There’s a catch.

During exercise, blood is diverted away from the stomach to assist working muscles. Gastric emptying slows down and digesting fuel while exercising now becomes more challenging, increasing the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort. Failure to fuel properly can impact race performance, recovery, and progress.

By encapsulating the carbohydrates, the hydrogel facilitates smoother, more controlled, and faster transport of fuel from the stomach to the small intestine. Once in the intestines, acidity falls, and the hydrogel dissolves. The carbohydrates are now released and absorbed, to be used as fuel. Hydrogel Technology helps limit the GI discomfort, making it easier for athletes to comfortably consume and tolerate high concentrations of carbohydrates during sport.

Maurten Gels have widely been associated with success in running — particularly the marathon. They have fueled the fastest marathons in history and are the official on-course marathon gel at the New York, Chicago, Boston, and Berlin city marathons. The best energy gel for marathon runners is the one they practice with and can tolerate while running at high intensity. But choosing the right race gels starts in training.

Maurten Gels are not electrolyte gels nor are they hydration gels for runners. There is no strong scientific evidence to support that athletes need to add electrolytes during activities. Maurten Gels do contain a small amount of sodium, but they are developed to be the best energy gels for optimizing your intake and absorption of carbohydrates during higher intensity activity. It is the availability of carbohydrate that will have the greatest impact on performance in endurance sport.

The number on the Maurten Gel sachet refers to the amount of calories (kcal) per serving. This numbering system is based on the energy available from each gram of carbohydrate (1g = 4 kcal). For example, Maurten Gel 100 and Gel 160 have 25 grams and 40 grams of carbs, respectively. This allows athletes to quickly understand the carbohydrate and energy content in each product — and to plan fueling strategies with precision.

The ratio of glucose to fructose is also important.

Glucose and fructose use different intestinal transporters to maximize carbohydrate absorption and increase gastrointestinal tolerance. Research shows the ratio used in Gel 100, Gel 100 Caf 100, and Gel 160 (1:0.8) enables higher total intake by increasing fructose to fill the gap once glucose is saturated. This ratio and combination of types of sugars allow for greater utilization of carbohydrates during exercise, helping athletes sustain high intensities for longer durations.
Maurten Gels — in-detail.

Maurten Gel is designed to be used as follows:

Before — gel pre-workout or race, as a carbohydrate preload.
During training and racing for sustained energy.
Gels provide a concentrated source of energy that is easy to carry — making them ideal when you already have fluids available or want precise carbohydrate fueling.

Gel 100

Designed to help athletes consume carbohydrate fuel in smaller, more frequent doses, Gel 100 contains 25 grams of carbohydrates per sachet (≈100 kcal).

Gel 100 Caf 100 — an energy gel with caffeine

Gel 100 Caf 100 is the same as Gel 100, but with caffeine. It contains 25 grams of carbohydrates per sachet (≈100 kcal) and 100 mg of caffeine per sachet. That’s approximately the equivalent of 1.5 espressos — or one cup of brewed coffee.
