Off the mark

This Collection — designed by the Maurten Nutrition Team — fuels the first 4 weeks of a typical marathon training plan. After which, the Maurten Marathon Training Collection takes you the rest of the way to race day.

The Maurten Run Training Collection should be used during intentional workouts (tempo sessions or long runs) to help the body with the process of adapting to, and tolerating, the consumption of carbohydrates while running.

Sports fuels are specifically designed to reduce the workload on your digestive system during high-intensity training, when blood is diverted to working muscles. In these specific sessions it’s appropriate to continue using high-carbohydrate fuel.

You don’t need to fuel every workout. In sessions with a relatively low target heart rate, where the effort may be described as conversational, the demand for high-carbohydrate intake is reduced.

How to use

Fuel your tempo sessions:
Pre-session: If it’s an early start or you are fitting training around a busy day, use Solid 160 an hour before.
Warm-up: Gel 100 / Gel 100 Caf 100

Fueling long runs examples:

Weeks 1-4: 1 or 2 Gel 100 per run to support increasing demands and varied long-run workouts.

Solid 160 — used for the in-between moments, pre- or post-run, to maintain carbohydrate demands as volume and intensity increase.

Real food — when undertaking a sustained training plan the best source of nutrition to help with adaptations will come from real food options. Use real food pre-workout and then, during training, revert to sports fuel for the specific needs of digesting carbohydrates.

The following Fuel Guides outline fueling strategies for common running training sessions and race plans. A fuel guide is highly personal. Use this information as reference only to fuel your training and racing better.

Sports fuel is supported by science and works alongside real food — not as a replacement. Some Fuel Guides — longer or more intense — rely heavily on the specific composition of sports nutrition. Others less so.

Hydrogel Technology

Carbohydrates are the currency of fueling — to sustain performance, athletes need to consume them when training and racing, but it can be difficult during high-intensity exercise. Hydrogel Technology encapsulates the carbohydrates, carrying them through the stomach to be absorbed. Combining research–driven development alongside feedback from runners, cyclists, and triathletes, Maurten’s fueling ecosystem enables all humans to become greater athletes.
