FUELING WITH MAURTEN ON-COURSE

MAURTEN ON THE COURSE

Along the course, there are 8 aid stations. Based on your estimated finish time, we assume you’re part of the elite field. As an elite, you have the option to keep your own bottles at each station. Historically, BMW BERLIN-MARATHON also provides the service of bottle handing at the aid stations to the elite field. No other major Marathon provides this service. If you drop your bottle or need more, DRINK MIX 160 is served throughout the course. There will also be a gel station at the 27.5 KM mark serving GEL 100.

YOUR RACE PLAN:

Below is a personalised fuel plan, based on your estimated finish time.

1 DAY BEFORE THE RACE:

1. Consume 500ml of DRINK MIX 320 to top up glycogen levels.

2. A) If you’re in the elite field:

Prepare your race bottles. Mix two DRINK MIX 320 in 1000ml of water. Attach one GEL 100 CAF 100 (if you’re used to caffeine) to the 20K bottle. Divide the drink into 8 race bottles, ready to be handed in to the organizer.

2. B) If you’re not in the elite field (but want to have a strategy based on DRINK MIX 320):

Prepare your bottles (as above) and hand them in to the organizer’s ‘Own Refreshments’ booth by 7:45am on race day. Entrance Gate 5, Otto-von-Bismarck-Allee.

Tip: Many elite runners tape one GEL 100 to every race bottle to ensure they have the option to either drink or eat.

3 HOURS BEFORE THE RACE:

3. Finish one bottle of DRINK MIX 320 (500 ml) when you wake up.

DURING THE RACE:

4. Consume one GEL 100 CAF 100 at the starting line.

5. A) Grab one bottle at every aid station and try to finish each one (roughly 125-150ml) to ensure a steady carbohydrate intake.

5. B) If you have a GEL-based strategy, carry your gels in your pocket or the lining of your shorts and consume one every 6km. Grab DRINK MIX 160 at a few aid stations along the course.

Tip: In hot weather, prioritise drinking DRINK MIX 160 at most stations and reduce your total gel intake to 4 or 5 instead.

Based on your estimated finish time, you’re no stranger to long training sessions. And you burn a lot of carbohydrates. Science shows that training your gut makes a difference. But using carbohydrates in training also aids your recovery. Here are some fuel guides for your key training sessions. Use these leading up to the race to ensure you’re fully prepared.

TEMPO SESSIONS + INTERVAL SESSIONS:

– 1 x GEL 100 CAF 100 before the session.
– 1 x DRINK MIX 320 throughout the session.

LONG RUN SESSIONS:

Try to mimic your race fuelling strategy in some of your long run sessions.

– 1 x DRINK MIX 320 before the start of the session.
– Consume one GEL every 6km. You can replace the consumption of a GEL with 1/3 of a DRINK MIX 320 bottle – recommended in hot conditions.
